First Arctic Cold Wave of the Season Affects 200 Million People in the US

The first wave of arctic cold of the season affected 200 million people on Tuesday in the United States, after the country experienced its first major snowfall of the season and the lowest temperatures ever recorded.

In parts of the states of Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan, more than 30 centimeters of snow accumulated during the morning. Snow continued to fall in Buffalo and Syracuse, in northern New York state, as well as in some areas of Pennsylvania.

This cold wave is also expected to cause daily record low temperatures in dozens of cities in the southeast, from Knoxville, Tennessee, to the Florida Keys.

In Florida, iguanas are falling from trees as the temperatures have dropped enough to turn these reptiles into statues. When the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius, the metabolism of these animals slows down dramatically.

Jacksonville, in the so-called 'Sunshine State', is forecast to reach -1 °C this Tuesday, marking the lowest temperature recorded in an autumn since 1976. The same could happen in Savannah (Georgia), also in the southern part of the country, if the low drops to -2.2 °C.
