Urgent Call to Combat School Bullying in US

A migrant organization of Guanajuatenses in Texas has made an urgent call to combat school bullying and discrimination in the United States, following the tragic case of an 11-year-old Hispanic girl in Utah who took her own life after suffering intimidation and threats of deportation against her family.

The Guanajuato association urged migrant families to immediately inform the school in writing if a minor reports a case of bullying. Generally, the internal authority of the school institution, known as "school police," should also be notified.

The problem of bullying is not limited to the United States, as municipalities in Guanajuato such as León and Irapuato also face concerning cases. The Secretary of Education, Luis Ignacio Sánchez Gómez, emphasized the importance of fostering dialogue, peaceful conflict resolution, and the protection of bullying victims.

In a alarming case that recently occurred at Secondary General School number 6 in Irapuato, a student was stabbed by a classmate after suffering constant verbal abuse and mockery. During the year 2024, the Guanajuato Secretary of Education has received 540 reports related to violence in the school environment, of which 215 have been confirmed.

The mother of the assaulted minor reported that the school did not take preventive measures before the tragic attack, highlighting the importance of effectively and timely addressing bullying in Guanajuato and elsewhere.
