Violence Threat in Nuevo Laredo Raises Concerns

The Webb County Sheriff's Office is alerting the public about the risk of violence in the region. Sheriff Martin Cuellar and his team have stated they are prepared with trained personnel and cutting-edge technology to protect the border from potential violent acts that may enter the United States.

Mexican authorities carried out the extradition to the United States of two former leaders of the violent cartel Los Zetas last Thursday. The deported individuals were identified as Miguel Angel Treviño Morales, known as 'Z-40', and Óscar Omar Treviño Morales, known as 'Z-42', who turned out to be brothers.

The Webb Sheriff's Office has advised the public to exercise caution when visiting Nuevo Laredo and other areas of Tamaulipas, a northeastern state in Mexico where Los Zetas originated. This cartel has been known for committing various massacres, some against migrants attempting to enter the United States illegally.

Regarding the extradition, the brothers' lawyer, Juan Manuel Delgado, did not immediately confirm the action when consulted by Reuters. It is worth mentioning that on February 3, 2025, the city of Nuevo Laredo experienced a dramatic increase in violence, with gunfire erupting throughout the area.
