A research group from the USA has reported that memory plays a key role in determining the amount of food a person consumes, and this may be one of the reasons for problems with overeating in some individuals. A team of researchers from the Monell Chemical Senses Center has discovered that a specific group of nerve cells in the brain, responsible for the retention of information about sweetness and fat, is directly related to food intake and weight gain. These findings may have implications for the treatment of obesity and weight management.
The research leader, scientist Joelle de Lartigue, emphasized the importance of the connection between memory and the type and amount of food consumed by each individual. In response to a question about how strongly memory influences eating habits, she stated: "Definitely yes." The team was the first to identify a memory system associated with food in the brain and its direct link to issues of overeating and obesity related to diet.
