FDA Approves ZYN as Safer Alternative to Traditional Tobacco

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized the marketing of ZYN nicotine pouches, making them the first product of this kind approved in the United States. This authorization was granted to Swedish Match for marketing in the U.S.

This decision marks a significant advance in public health protection by providing a better alternative compared to cigarettes and other traditional tobacco products for adults over 21. Tom Hayes, president of Swedish Match North America, LLC, emphasized that this FDA decision recognizes the role that ZYN can play in protecting public health by helping people quit cigarettes and other traditional tobacco products.

According to Hayes, an estimated 45 million Americans regularly consume nicotine, and approximately 30 million of them smoke, the most harmful form of nicotine consumption. FDA officials noted that ZYN contains fewer harmful ingredients than cigarettes and various types of smokeless tobacco, including snuff, products linked to cancer and other potentially fatal diseases.

Additionally, according to company data, a substantial portion of adults who previously smoked have completely switched to ZYN, which led regulators to highlight that these products demonstrate benefits for adults who consume cigarettes or smokeless tobacco products. Matthew Farrelly, from the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products, stated that nicotine pouch products meet this criterion by benefiting adults who consume these products.

The FDA authorized a wide range of ZYN products that include varieties such as ZYN Cool Mint, Peppermint, Spearmint, Wintergreen, Citrus, Coffee, Cinnamon, Smooth, Chill, and Menthol, in concentrations of 3 mg and 6 mg. These products now have FDA authorization for marketing in the United States, offering consumers a less harmful alternative to cigarettes and other traditional tobacco products.
