US Renews Support for Argentina After $2.5 Billion Repayment

The United States Government renewed its support for President Javier Milei by highlighting the repayment of the US$ 2.5 billion that Argentina used from the swap agreed between the two countries to contain the price of the dollar in the pre-electoral period. 'President Javier Milei continues to firmly fulfill the renewed mandate of the Argentine people in favor of economic freedom. Our nation has received the full repayment, generating tens of millions of dollars in profits for the US taxpayer,' the statement read. 'With the stabilization of Argentina, the markets are now covering the financial needs of the Argentine Republic under the visionary leadership of President Milei. Argentina has regained access to financial markets and has implemented encouraging changes in its monetary and exchange rate policy,' affirmed the US Secretary of the Treasury in a social media post. In this regard, he also highlighted that the policy of US President Donald Trump, through the 'Strengthening the Economy' initiative, 'is transforming Latin America in ways that prioritize the United States and surround this country with stability and prosperity'. In this context, Bessent announced that 'as a reflection of its strengthened financial position, Argentina has quickly and fully repaid its limited drawdown under the swap with the United States, so that the Foreign Exchange Stabilization Fund (FESF) currently has no pesos'. The American official emphasized that 'stabilizing a strong US ally and generating tens of millions in profits for Americans is a great achievement of the 'America First' initiative'. 'Setting the course for Latin America, a strong and stable Argentina that contributes to consolidating a prosperous Western Hemisphere, is undoubtedly best for us,' he added. Bessent indicated that 'in summary, the Treasury deployed the Foreign Exchange Stabilization Fund exactly in line with its congressional purpose, and our FSE actions worked exactly as Congress intended: to stabilize Argentina at a time of crisis, with acute, short-term, and urgent pressure on exchange rate and financial stability'. 'The international community, including the IMF through its extensive existing program, has come together and maintains firm support for Argentina, its current reforms, and its prudent fiscal strategy. President Milei and Minister of Finance Luis Caputo are generating positive momentum, and we anticipate their continued progress,' affirmed the official. Finally, he expressed his conviction to 'continue to enthusiastically support President Milei and Argentina'.
