Today, it seems the same cycle is repeating as gas prices approach their highest levels in three years. Between January and March of last year, gas prices surged by about a third due to a severe cold wave and an unprecedented rise in liquefied natural gas exports. The result was that power companies turned to increasing their reliance on coal generation as a cheaper alternative to gas. This surge is not a good sign for those hoping for the continuation of the historic decline in coal use in the United States.
