The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced on Sunday that he will authorize the Department of Commerce and the Office of the Trade Representative to impose a 100% tariff on all foreign films entering the country. This measure has been proposed with the aim of protecting the local film industry, which, according to Trump, is facing a rapid decline.
In a message posted on his official account on Truth Social, Trump expressed his concern about the state of the entertainment industry in the U.S., stating that areas like Hollywood are being devastated. The president believes that competition from foreign films poses a threat to national security, as other countries offer incentives to attract U.S. studios and filmmakers.
Trump emphasized that unfair competition also carries risks in terms of messaging and propaganda, which is why he has decided to authorize the relevant entities to establish a 100% tariff on any film produced abroad that enters U.S. territory. He concluded his message with the characteristic slogan of his campaign rhetoric: "We want movies made in America, again!".
