DHL Suspends International Shipments Over $800 to US

DHL Express announced a temporary suspension of international shipments to the US valued over $800, effective April 21, due to new customs regulations. This move follows recent changes that lowered the customs clearance threshold, causing confusion in the logistics industry and potential delays for consumers.

DHL Suspends International Shipments Over $800 to US

The international package delivery company DHL Express has announced that it will temporarily suspend international business-to-consumer shipments to the United States valued over 800 dollars. This measure will come into effect starting April 21 and responds to recent customs regulations imposed by the United States, which lowered the threshold for simplified customs processing from 2,500 to 800 dollars.

"This change has caused a sudden increase in formal customs procedures, which we manage 24 hours a day," noted the company. DHL Express accused U.S. authorities of causing "intimidation" by canceling tariff-free trade provisions for packages coming from China and Hong Kong.

In the words of Tobias Meyer, CEO of DHL Group, "companies like manufacturers are starting to show signs of exhaustion due to the constant changes in Donald Trump's tariff policies." Meyer criticized the volatility of the U.S. president's announcements, whose decisions often change a few days after being announced.

The measure communicated by DHL Express coincides with the suspension of maritime mail services to the United States by Hongkong Post. The company indicated that shipments exceeding 800 dollars, regardless of origin, could experience delays of several days.

Regarding shipments over 800 dollars from business to business, DHL Express clarified that these will not be affected by the temporary suspension. Meyer emphasized that this situation causes confusion in the manufacturing and distribution industry, warning that the tariff increase will directly affect the American consumer.

On the other hand, the logistics company FedEx has implemented significant adjustments in response to recent regulatory changes in customs, without suspending its international shipments to the United States. Starting May 2, FedEx will apply new customs processing fees for shipments exceeding 800 dollars, subject to formal entry and the payment of applicable tariffs and taxes.

Since April, FedEx has established a temporary surcharge for packages from China, Hong Kong, and the Philippines, reflecting the impact of the elimination of the "de minimis" exemption by the United States. Tariff policies suspended by President Donald Trump include tariffs on phones, computers, and electronic products.
