The company Tesla, founded by American billionaire Elon Musk, warns that the trade war, initiated by President Donald Trump, may lead to increased tariffs on its electric vehicles and higher production costs for transportation means that are produced in America.
In a letter to U.S. Trade Representative James Grier, Tesla expressed support for fair trade practices but stressed that American exporters "may face unreasonable consequences when other countries start to respond to U.S. trade measures."
Tesla noted that despite the increase in local production, some raw materials and components will still need to be purchased from international markets. The company emphasized that trade measures should not contradict the goals of fostering and supporting local production on a larger scale.
President Trump introduced tariffs on imports of steel, aluminum, and other goods from countries such as Canada, China, the EU, Japan, and Australia, and they have already begun to take action. In response, Canada also imposed tariffs on certain goods from the U.S., while the European Union announced that it will start applying "strong, but proportional" tariffs on certain U.S. imports starting April 1.
Some Canadian provinces have also threatened to halt imports of Tesla electric vehicles. It is worth noting that Trump recently appeared alongside Musk in the White House, praising Tesla vehicles and stating that he would buy one, in a show of support for his close friend who is facing aggressive attacks due to his patriotism, as the U.S. president emphasized.
