Countries Respond to US Tariffs Amid National Security Claims

After the implementation of new economic measures regarding tariffs proposed by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, both Canada and China responded with similar actions to counter the situation. Regarding Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum reported on the adoption of tariff and non-tariff measures in response.

On Monday, March 3, the White House issued a statement announcing the imposition of tariffs on North American countries as part of an effort to combat the threat of narcotraffic and the circulation of fentanyl in the country. In the statement, the White House declared that Trump was implementing tariffs on Canada and Mexico under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, arguing the need to protect national security and public health in the United States.

In response to these measures, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the tariffs imposed by the United States as "unjustified" in a statement issued the same day as the notification. For its part, China also announced the imposition of additional tariffs of 10% and 15% on various agricultural products imported from the United States.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian informed the media that this action would take effect from March 10 of the same year and would include products such as sorghum, soybeans, pork, beef, seafood, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. "Additional tariffs will be imposed on certain goods imported from the United States," noted Lin Jian.

In the midst of this situation, the Canadian and Chinese governments expressed their willingness to maintain dialogue and consultation with the United States to address mutual concerns on the basis of equality and mutual respect. The Canadian president reaffirmed that Canada would not leave unanswered what it considers an unjustified decision and expressed that the tariffs imposed by the United States on its exports have no justification.
