Significant Decrease in Migrant Apprehensions in 2024

In 2024, the immigration authorities of the United States and Mexico carried out a total of 486,343 apprehensions of migrants from El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, belonging to the so-called Northern Triangle of Central America. These data, consulted by EFE, show a 38% decrease compared to the 786,690 captures made in 2023, which represents a drop of 300,347 cases, according to figures from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

During the past year, 288,337 detentions were recorded at the southwestern border of the United States, reflecting a 48.7% decrease compared to the previous year, which equals 273,892 fewer records. On the other hand, in Mexico, apprehensions of this group of Central Americans dropped from 224,461 in 2023 to 198,006 in 2024, showing a decrease of 26,455 records, representing an 11.78% decrease.

The data collected by the IOM was obtained from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and from the Migration Policy, Registration, and Identity Unit of Mexico. It is worth noting that every year, more than 500,000 people from these three countries attempt to emigrate irregularly to the United States in search of better living conditions, including thousands of minors.
