U.S. to Increase Semiconductor Restrictions on China

The Trump administration is planning to further tighten restrictions on the supply of semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China, continuing and expanding the Biden administration's efforts to limit Beijing's technological capabilities, Bloomberg News reported on Monday.

According to the publication, American officials recently met with their Japanese and Dutch counterparts regarding restrictions on the export potential of engineers from Tokyo Electron and ASML related to servicing equipment for semiconductor production in China.

Some officials in the Trump administration are also aiming to additionally limit the quantity and types of Nvidia microchips that can be exported to China without a license, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Nvidia, Tokyo Electron, ASML, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Trade, and the Ministry of Economics, Trade, and Industry of Japan did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.

Trump's goal is to ensure that key allies are aligned with U.S. restrictions on China, similar to those that American companies face regarding chip production, such as Lam Research, KLA, and Applied Materials, Bloomberg News claims.
