The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced new tariffs of 50% on steel and aluminum from Mexico and Canada, in case the current 25% tariffs remain in effect by March 4. Despite some agreements reached between the governments of Mexico and Canada with Trump to curb the tariffs, the White House has confirmed that these new tariffs could be significantly increased.
According to CBC News correspondent Katie Simpson, the White House detailed President Trump's plan regarding tariffs aimed at Mexico and Canada. In an email sent to a journalist, it was explained that if the current tariffs remain in effect for March, an additional 25% on steel and aluminum will be added starting March 12, bringing the total tariff to 50%.
The White House clarified that this measure is not a new request from Trump, but an addition to the tariffs already imposed by the U.S. president. Trump has expressed his firmness in maintaining these tariffs, arguing that Mexico and Canada have not done enough to prevent them.
