Two weeks after assuming the presidency of the United States for the second time, Donald Trump fulfilled his electoral promise and confirmed today that he will impose tariffs on products from Canada, Mexico, and China. The president signed the decrees this Saturday at his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, and starting this Tuesday, the tariffs of 25 percent on his North American neighbors and 10 percent on China will come into effect.
"It is because of the illegal fentanyl they produce and allow to be distributed in our country, and because of the migrants who enter illegally into the United States," said spokesperson Karoline Leavitt at a press conference. Trump, for his part, justified the decision by pointing out that the migration situation is concerning: "People are coming into our country in such horrible ways and in such large numbers."
In addition, the U.S. president emphasized that the trade deficits with Mexico and Canada are unsustainable, which reinforced his decision to impose the tariffs. Although it has not yet been specified which products will be affected by the tariffs, the government mentioned that it could include a wide variety of goods, from agricultural products to vehicle parts.
