Trump Considers 25% Tariff Increase

President of the USA Donald Trump stated that his administration is considering the possibility of imposing customs duties at around 25 percent, which could be announced on February 1. Trump did not provide further details. During Asian trading on Tuesday, the dollar rose in a unstable situation following the president's announcement about the possible imposition of duties on Canada and Mexico in the near future.

Such comments turned out to be unexpected since previously officials said that any new duties would be introduced 'rationed'. An exceptional mandate was given to agencies exclusively for the purpose of studying and regulating the continuing trade deficit.

"Customs duties at 25 percent," noted Shoki Omori, chief strategist in the international division at Mizuho Securities in Tokyo.
