Buenos Aires, December 20 (NA) — Nearly 500 marines from Camp Pendleton will be deployed to Yuma, Arizona, to support security on the border between the United States and Mexico, the San Diego Tribune reported, according to the Argentine News Agency.
Military Reinforcement and Assigned Tasks The marines will be responsible for tasks related to reinforcing physical barriers, installing signage, and conducting surveillance and detection in border areas.
However, the military personnel is not authorized to make arrests, seizures, or searches, as these functions correspond to civilian forces.
Zone with National Defense Status According to the report, these deployments have been frequent during the last year of President Donald Trump's term, especially in Arizona areas designated as a National Defense Area (NDA). This classification enables the transfer of land to the Department of Defense to strengthen security with military resources such as drones, sensors, walls, barbed wire, and specialized patrol.
Although the marines cannot enforce immigration law, the designation allows for the detention of individuals who illegally enter military zones and their transfer to federal forces for corresponding prosecution.
