One week after the elections, the United States still does not know the color of Congress, whether it will be Republican red or Democratic blue, although conservatives, who have regained the Senate, are leading the tally in the House of Representatives and are four seats away from a majority in that chamber.
"This is something the American population needs and desperately wants," said Mike Johnson, the current leader of the House of Representatives, at a press conference on Tuesday. Besides the reelection of former President Donald Trump as the future leader of the country, according to voting projections from major U.S. media outlets, Republicans could also control both legislative chambers.
In the House, where the majority is at 218, conservatives already have 214 seats secured and Democrats 205. Of the 16 seats still in play, Republicans are leading in nine and Democrats in seven. The majority of the unassigned ones are in California, the state with the most deliveries.
In the Senate, which has already completed the count, Republicans have taken the majority from Democrats in the elections held on November 5 and will have 53 of the 100 seats, according to the same voting projections. "We will work closely with Trump and his administration to change this country and unleash, as he says, a new golden era in the United States," Johnson added.
Slow counts and uncertainty have been a trend in recent electoral events in the United States. In the 2020 presidential elections, in which Trump still does not acknowledge that he lost to Democrat Joe Biden, it took four days to know the winner. "It is clear that the American people want secure borders and want to prevent terrorists and criminals from entering the country."
"We are very optimistic. We are making progress and we are going to turn the page. These are common-sense matters," Johnson stated. "We know for sure that non-citizens voted in some places because they were registering to vote in violation of federal law, (...) but due to all the attention the American people paid to this, I think we were able to greatly limit the amount of fraud and irregularity and many of the things that concern Americans after 2020, so that is a good sign."
The leader of that chamber minimized potential cases of fraud on Tuesday. "In the 2022 midterms, control of the House of Representatives was not defined until nine days after the elections." EFE
