US to Impose New Sanctions on Russia Next Week

The U.S. Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, announced on Tuesday that her government plans to implement a new package of sanctions against Russia next week. These measures will target countries and companies that supply military material to Moscow, aiming to increase pressure on the Kremlin.

Yellen expressed at a press conference during the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that the sanctions will focus on those who facilitate Russia's war machine, including intermediaries in third countries that provide essential materials for its army.

These statements come amid the summit of financial leaders from around the world, taking place in Washington as part of the meetings of the IMF and the World Bank. The goal of the new restrictions is to hinder the Russian Armed Forces' access to technology and weapons used in the conflict in Ukraine since February 2022.

The United States and the European Union, along with allies such as Canada, have imposed a series of sanctions to isolate the Russian economy from international financial markets, including the exclusion of Russian banks from the SWIFT system and restrictions on the country's energy sector.

In response to Western measures, Russia has sought other avenues to obtain military material, turning to countries like China, India, Malaysia, and Thailand. According to reports from Washington, the Kremlin has acquired weapons, ammunition, and drones through nations like North Korea and Iran, in an attempt to evade the sanctions imposed by the West.
