Rubén Oseguera González, known as "El Menchito", will be sentenced on Friday, March 7, in a federal court in Washington D.C., United States. Judge Beryl A. Howell, from the District of Columbia, will determine the sentence he will face for drug-related offenses and firearm use.
In September 2024, a jury found Oseguera González guilty of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and methamphetamine, as well as possession of firearms and destructive devices for drug trafficking purposes. The U.S. prosecution has requested a life sentence and a fine of up to $12 billion.
The defendant's defense has argued that his familial relationship with Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, "El Mencho", leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), exposed him to pressures to engage in criminal activities. For this reason, they have requested a lighter sentence of between 30 and 40 years in prison.
The hearing is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and is part of the cooperation between Mexico and the United States in the fight against drug trafficking, which included the transfer of several alleged drug traffickers to U.S. territory.
"El Menchito" will be sentenced by the judge who convicted his sister, Jessica Johanna Oseguera, aka "La Negra", for money laundering in 2021. The son of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes was first arrested in January 2014 in Zapopan, Jalisco, but was released shortly after due to lack of evidence against him for drug trafficking.
In 2015, he was arrested again in the same municipality, this time by forces from the Mexican Army and the Federal Police. In 2020, he was extradited to the United States, where he currently faces charges in the Federal District Court.
