The President of the United States, Donald Trump, decided to postpone once again the implementation of a 25% tariff on all Mexican products. These tariffs, which were expected to take effect on March 4, have been delayed until April 2. Trump stated that the decision is due to the efforts made by both countries in the fight against fentanyl trafficking.
In a meeting at the White House, Trump assured that "he will not stop the tariffs," although he noted that "not all" will remain and that some will be eliminated in the coming weeks. The U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, supported the postponement of the tariffs, stating that it is a result of joint efforts in the fight against drug trafficking.
Hours after this announcement, it was confirmed that the Mexican Security Cabinet, led by Omar García Harfuch and Chancellor Juan Ramón de la Fuente, will travel to Washington to meet for the first time with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This meeting will take place as part of diplomatic efforts between Mexico and the United States.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum celebrated this decision and confirmed the effective date of the tariffs for April 2. Trump expressed his optimism regarding the agreements that may be reached in the future, emphasizing that "they will see something that will be amazing."
