El Menchito could face life imprisonment in the U.S.

Rubén Oseguera González, known as "El Menchito" and son of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias "El Mencho", leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), faces a possible life sentence in the United States. Prosecutors have requested this sentence for his involvement in the trafficking of cocaine and methamphetamine, drugs that pose a serious health problem in U.S. territory.

"El Menchito's" lawyers argue that their client was not the main responsible for the cartel's operations and suggest that, due to his relationship with his father, he may have been pressured to participate in criminal activities. The final sentencing will be issued on March 7, 2025, sources close to the case revealed.

Rubén Oseguera González was extradited to the United States in 2020 after being arrested in 2015. He is identified as one of the key operators of the CJNG, one of the most violent drug cartels in Mexico today. The prosecution claims that "El Menchito" played a central role in the organization’s illegal activities, acting as his father's right hand from a young age.

In September 2024, a jury in Washington found him guilty of conspiracy to traffic drugs and possession of firearms. This implication has had a significant impact both in Mexico and in the United States, where thousands of people have been affected by the consumption of illegal substances. The prosecution has also requested a multi-million dollar fine for "El Menchito" amounting to more than 12 billion dollars.

Despite the life sentence request, Rubén Oseguera González's defense will file a petition for the imposition of the minimum sentence of 30 years in prison instead of the maximum.
