The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced today his intention to hold high-level diplomatic meetings next week to seek a solution to the conflict in Ukraine. Among the scheduled meetings, a face-to-face meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington stands out, along with a phone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
During a meeting in the Oval Office with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Trump expressed his determination to end the war in Ukraine. "I would like that war to end," the president declared, highlighting the importance of finding a solution to the conflict in the region.
It is worth mentioning that the last direct contact between Trump and Zelensky took place at a trilateral summit in Paris, mediated by French President Emmanuel Macron last December. In that context, Trump lamented the situation in Ukraine, emphasizing the devastating impact on infrastructure and the human lives lost.
Regarding the diplomatic strategy of the Trump administration, specific conditions have been established, such as requiring Ukraine to provide rare earth minerals in exchange for U.S. assistance. Additionally, Russia has been threatened with measures such as new tariffs, additional sanctions, and intervention in the oil market to push prices down.
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has prioritized the immediate resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. However, despite these new diplomatic initiatives, the goal of reaching a solution to the conflict has not yet been achieved.
It is important to note that this announcement comes in a context where Trump was the president-elect, following his victory over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Regarding his ties with Russia, the president highlighted the good historical relationship between the two countries, although he expressed his deep sorrow over the development of the conflict in Ukraine.
