The nominee by President of the United States, Donald Trump, as Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, highlighted the importance of Americans having access to well-paying jobs that allow them to produce goods and services for both the domestic and foreign markets. In an opening speech, Greer emphasized that it is essential for American citizens to have equal conditions to compete globally and achieve economic mobility and social cohesion.
Greer, who would hold a ministerial-level position equivalent to that of an ambassador, committed to developing and implementing trade policies that promote the creation of decent jobs. He emphasized that the economic and national security of the United States largely depends on having solid supply chains, as this would strengthen the country's ability to protect its citizens and deter conflicts in a volatile global context.
During a hearing before the Senate Finance Committee, Greer proposed considering the imposition of a "universal tariff" on U.S. imports as a measure to combat outsourcing and protect the domestic industry. If confirmed in the position, he would work closely with the Department of Commerce on the implementation of the tariffs announced by Trump, not only related to China but also in possible trade tensions with other trading partners such as Mexico, Canada, and the European Union.
In this regard, Greer highlighted the importance of the United States maintaining its productive capacity and not just limiting itself to consumption, emphasizing the need to promote manufacturing at the national level. After his experience as chief of staff to Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, Greer expressed his commitment to creating trade policies that drive job creation and strengthen his country's economic position internationally.
