The President of the United States, Donald Trump, reiterated his firm stance on imposing tariffs as a deterrent to prevent BRICS countries from considering replacing the US dollar as the reference currency. Trump expressed his opinion through his online platform Truth Social, warning that the United States will demand a commitment from these countries not to introduce a "BRICS currency" or support any other currency instead of the dollar.
The US leader indicated that otherwise, the countries would face 100% tariffs and could lose access to the US economy's market. These statements come amid rising international trade tensions, where Trump has reaffirmed his position on the importance of the dollar as a global reference currency.
In a prior action, during his first day in the White House, Trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, his two main trading partners, as retaliation for issues such as fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration at the border. Additionally, the president demonstrated the effectiveness of his tariff policies in a diplomatic conflict with Colombia, where he threatened 25% to 50% duties after disagreements over the deportation of migrants, which ultimately led to the acceptance of flights by the South American country.
