Trump Offers Severance Pay to Federal Workers

The Trump administration is offering severance pay to two million federal workers who resign by February 6. This decision could save around $100 billion. Unions warn this could lead to chaos for Americans relying on federal services.

Trump Offers Severance Pay to Federal Workers

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump announced that it will offer compensation to the two million federal workers who resign before February 6, according to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) reported to EFE. It is expected that between 5% and 10% of the federal workforce in the U.S. will accept this proposal.

Everett Kelley, national president of AFGE, pointed out that getting rid of career public servants will have unforeseen and chaotic consequences for Americans who depend on the federal government. On his first day in office, Trump signed executive orders to return to full-time in-person work, freeze federal workforce hiring, and eliminate diversity initiatives from the previous administration.

The proposed "deferred resignation" offers workers a compensation package equivalent to about eight months of salary and benefits. The OPM indicated that this offer is aimed at full-time federal employees, excluding military personnel, Postal Service staff, immigration agents, and national security staff. Details about this option will be revealed on Tuesday.

On the other hand, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) expressed its concerns and described the compensations as generating "chaos" in government services. Although the number of public officials has remained stable since 1970, the demand for government services has increased in the country.
