On Monday, January 27, Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered the deployment of an additional 400 soldiers to the border with Mexico. This measure was taken to coordinate with the United States Border Patrol and adds to the deployment of 1,500 soldiers at the border ordered by Donald Trump in his first week as president.
Mexican security elements located a drug camp on "Los Castores" Island in Miguel Alemán, Tamaulipas, where a group of gunmen attacked the Border Patrol. Firearms, cartridges, communication radios, and tactical equipment were found at the site.
The spokesperson for the Texas Department of Public Safety in the southern region reported that armed men fired from Mexico at Border Patrol officers who were patrolling in Frontón, Starr County, Texas. Mexican authorities arrived at the scene but were unable to locate the aggressors, although they later found the drug camp on "Los Castores" Island.
After the attack, the Border Patrol assured that Texas would continue to closely monitor the area and utilize all available resources to prevent transnational threats to law enforcement. On the other hand, Fox News reported the shooting and stated that it was carried out by a Mexican criminal group, which was questioned by Mexican authorities.
The Mexican government questioned whether the shooting in Texas really occurred and requested an investigation into the shots fired and the movements of the migrants involved in the incident. For its part, Texas will support closing the U.S. border to illegal migration, in line with the policies implemented by Donald Trump during his second presidency.
