Trump Pushes for Name Change of Gulf of Mexico

President Trump insists that the Gulf of Mexico should be renamed to the 'Gulf of America', despite objections from Mexico. The international naming authority continues to play a crucial role in this discussion.

Trump Pushes for Name Change of Gulf of Mexico

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has achieved another milestone in his quest to leave his mark on the world map. Recently, he signed a declaration on the continental shelf designating the body of water that has historically been known as the "Gulf of Mexico" as the "Gulf of America." This decision has been supported by the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, who stated: "The Gulf of Mexico remains the Gulf of Mexico."

Sheinbaum explained that the request to change the name of the gulf cannot be a unilateral process, as it would involve the evaluation of other nations. The International Hydrographic Organization, of which both the United States and Mexico are members, is the entity responsible for naming seas, oceans, and navigable waterways globally.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene announced that she would push for a bill to formalize the name change of the gulf. On his part, Trump, even before taking office, expressed his interest in redesigning the world map to reflect the supposed legitimate place of the United States as the most relevant and powerful nation globally.

In addition to the change in the name of the gulf, it is expected that Google Maps will adjust other geographic designations at Trump’s request. Among the planned modifications is Mount Denali in Alaska, which will likely regain its original name of Mount McKinley. According to The New York Times, these changes will be implemented quickly to reflect the new geographic determinations.

Besides his initiatives in the geographic realm, Trump has proceeded with the mass deportation of migrants, one of his most immediate measures upon taking power. Tom Homan, known as the "border czar," promised an intensification of deportations with the aim of generating "shock and awe." The cities of San Diego and Chicago have been identified as priority points in this immigration policy.

Trump's actions have sparked both criticism and defense. While some officials in his administration celebrate the deportations with photos of handcuffed migrants on planes, other political figures have expressed concern over the measures taken. Trump has generated expectations for significant changes in policy and geography, and his exercise of power will continue to be a topic of analysis and debate moving forward.
