Two people were killed and nine others injured on Saturday in a shooting on the campus of Brown University in the U.S. state of Rhode Island, officials said, as hundreds of police continue to hunt for the attacker who remains at large.
The streets surrounding the university were filled with police cars and ambulances hours after the shooting on campus where exams were being held.
This shooting is the latest in a long series of attacks on schools and universities in the United States, where attempts to restrict gun ownership face political hurdles.
President Donald Trump said he was briefed on the incident, saying: "That's a horrible thing," adding: "All we can do right now is pray for the victims."
Brett Smiley, mayor of Providence in northeastern United States, said at a press conference: "I can confirm that two people died this afternoon, and that eight others are in critical but stable condition."
Authorities later reported that a ninth person, who was injured by shrapnel from the shooting, was taken to the hospital.
Police released a 10-second clip of the suspect from behind, walking quickly down an empty street after he opened fire inside a first-floor lecture hall.
Brown University President Christina Paxson told the press late at night that ten of the 11 victims were students.
The shooting took place in the Barus and Holley building, which houses the engineering and physics departments of the prestigious university campus, which has about 11,000 students and where numerous exams were scheduled to take place.
