At a high school in Nashville, a student was killed and another injured during a shooting in the cafeteria. The alleged shooter, a 17-year-old student, died by suicide after the incident, according to the Metropolitan Nashville Police.
Police spokesperson Don Aaron stated that the injured student suffered a graze wound during the shooting. Another student was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to treat an eye injury sustained after the shooting.
At the time of the shooting, there were two school resource officers in the building. Students were being transported by bus as police were releasing them from the school. At the hospital, used as a reunification center, officials helped parents reconnect with their shocked children.
Dajuan Bernard, whose son was held in the auditorium with other students at the time of the incident, recounted that his son was startled when informing him of the shooting. Fortunately, they were not in the cafeteria where the shots were fired, and when they arrived at the scene, the aggression had ended and the shooter had already taken his life with a gun.
The school has about 2,000 students and is located in a neighborhood in Nashville. Parents were instructed to go to a nearby hospital instead of picking up their children at the school. Bernard expressed his relief to confirm that his son was safe but recounted the anguish of knowing that school shootings like this have become frequent.
For her part, FBI spokesperson Elizabeth Clement-Webb reported that the Nashville police have not yet requested the federal agency's assistance in the investigation of the shooting, which adds to other similar incidents that have occurred in the city recently.
