Donald Trump's presidential victory has led to contrasting effects in Nuevo León, stopping $1 billion in Chinese investments while attracting $700 million from U.S. companies eager to enter the market.

Impact of Trump's Victory on Foreign Investment in Nuevo León

Donald Trump's victory in the United States presidential elections last year has had two contrasting effects on foreign investment in Nuevo León. According to Sergio Reséndez, some Chinese projects amounting to over 1 billion dollars were halted, while American companies plan to invest 700 million dollars in the region.

Reséndez pointed out that with Trump's victory, Chinese projects were paralyzed. Despite having been on the rise in the previous two years, after the presidential elections, some of their clients significantly reduced the size of their projects in response to the uncertainty generated by the change of administration in the United States.

Before the elections in the United States, there was concern about the possible impact on Mexico and specifically in Nuevo León due to the policies that the new president would implement. However, following Trump's victory, American companies began to show interest in investing in the region, reactivating the topic of investments.

Since then, eight new American companies have visited Monterrey to explore market opportunities in sectors such as appliances, automotive, electronics, medical, and distribution, with plans to establish plants in the region. These companies, which plan to invest around 700 million dollars in fixed assets, believe that the rules under which they will operate guarantee them stability, without fear of possible tariffs.

Together, these eight companies would be making an estimated investment between 4.9 billion and 5.6 billion dollars, if the costs of the plants to be installed are added. This outlook shows a marked contrast between the slowdown of Chinese investment and the growing interest of American companies in investing in the region of Nuevo León.
