Sinaloa Cartel Member Sentenced to 20 Years in US Prison

Mexican citizen José Guadalupe Favela has been sentenced to 15 years in prison plus five years of home arrest in the U.S. after it was confirmed that he received tons of drugs for trafficking. Favela, a 68-year-old Mexican citizen and legal U.S. resident, lived in Riverdale, Georgia, and for years was part of an organization distributing methamphetamine and cocaine in Monroe. The FBI explained that the sentence against the Sinaloa Cartel member was possible thanks to an investigation of Operation Recover America, led by the agency and the Department of Homeland Security. Federal prosecutor William R. ‘Will’ Keyes stated that the man is responsible for “facilitating the distribution of large quantities of lethal drugs.” José Guadalupe Favela is one of several Sinaloa Cartel allies in Georgia, and three of his accomplices were sentenced in past years. According to recorded phone conversations, at the end of 2021, Favela was frustrated because there was no work due to a planned visit to Georgia by Ovidio Guzmán, ‘El Ratón’, son of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán and leader of Los Chapitos. Favela mentioned in the calls that they did not receive drug shipments to avoid drawing the attention of authorities while ‘El Ratón’ was visiting, although he ultimately did not arrive due to a storm. An FBI informant contacted Favela to obtain kilograms of ‘cold’, the term they used for methamphetamine, to which Favela agreed. As an intermediary, he contacted his accomplice, Luis Mejina Pina, to facilitate the transaction. For his intermediary services, Favela demanded one thousand dollars. Thus, the FBI ‘infiltrated’ the operations of the Sinaloa Cartel's allies and conducted three controlled purchases of methamphetamine and cocaine between December 2021 and October 2022. Following the last purchase, José Favela and his allies were arrested.
