Federal Judge Dismisses Case Against Trump

The U.S. federal judge who dismissed the case against former President Donald Trump for mishandling classified documents, now under appeal, could be considered as a potential attorney general for the Republican candidate if he wins the White House elections, according to a document leaked to the media. Aileen Cannon, appointed as a federal judge by Trump in 2020, dismissed the case against the Republican last July, arguing that the appointment of special prosecutor Jack Smith lacked constitutional authority.

According to reports from ABC News, Cannon has been mentioned as a potential candidate for attorney general if Trump wins the elections on November 5 against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. The case of mishandling confidential documents that Trump kept at his residence in Florida is one of the four legal proceedings facing the former president.

Cannon's decision was appealed by Smith to a federal appeals court, asking for the process against Trump to be resumed. Cannon, who also supervises the criminal case of a man accused of attempting to assassinate Trump in Florida, refused to recuse herself from the case, despite the defense's request.

In related news, the man accused of attempting to assassinate Trump at a golf course in Florida last September requested Cannon to recuse herself from the case, claiming that the judge has some "relationship" with the former president. However, Cannon rejected the recusal, stating that there are not sufficient grounds to step aside and confirmed that she will continue to oversee the legal proceedings. The defendant, in a handwritten letter, admitted his intention to commit the crime.
