Daily Pistachio Consumption Improves Eye Health

Researchers from Tufts University in Massachusetts have discovered that consuming a certain type of nut daily may be key to maintaining healthy eyes. While previously, the consumption of superfoods was considered a way to improve eyesight, researchers have now found that adding 57 grams of pistachios to your daily diet can significantly improve eye health by increasing the level of lutein.

Pistachios contain an antioxidant called lutein, which can enhance "macular pigment density" (MPOD), helping to filter light from screens, as well as protecting the retina from age-related degradation. Dr. Temy Scott, a specialist in neuropsychology who led the research, stated: "Our studies demonstrate that pistachios are not just a tasty snack; they can be beneficial for your eyes."

According to the results of the study, participants who consumed pistachios over a six-week period showed a significant increase in macular pigment density (MPOD), which strengthens protection against age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration. Dr. Scott added: "Pistachios offer a nutritious boost, providing essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants."

Lutein is also found in other foods, such as broccoli and leafy greens, but the natural fats in pistachios aid in the easier absorption of the antioxidant in the body. According to Scott: "Consuming a small amount of pistachios each day can help protect your vision, especially as you age."
