Mexico Sues US Over Migrant Detention Center Conditions

Mexico is suing the United States over conditions at a migrant detention center in Adelanto, California. The lawsuit cites unsanitary conditions, punitive isolation, and severe deficiencies in medical, mental health, nutrition, and outdoor access. The announcement will be made at a press conference at the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles, led by Vanessa Calva Ruiz, Director General of Consular Protection and Strategic Planning, accompanied by consuls and lawyers for the affected families. Diplomatic and lobbying efforts include the dialogue that the Undersecretary for North America, Roberto Velasco Álvarez, held with U.S. Ambassador Ronald D. Johnson. Similarly, the Mexican embassy will send letters to U.S. federal legislators exposing the inadequate medical care at the facility and will maintain contact with California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who has already filed anamicus curiaein the same lawsuit. To escalate the claim internationally, Mexico will request a thematic hearing before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH) to address the issue of deaths within ICE detention centers. Concurrently, during her visit to Los Angeles, Mexican consular authorities will meet with the families of the deceased and with civil organizations, such as the immigrant rights coalition and the Immigrant Defenders Law Center. The goal of these meetings is to foster community support and generate pressure on the responsible authorities. The government of Mexico announced it will exhaust all legal and diplomatic avenues to highlight and protest the conditions at the Adelanto, California, detention center. These measures are a response to the recent death of a national in migration custody on March 25, which added to two other deaths at the same facility. On the legal front, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) announced its participation in the L.T. Mesrobian lawsuit, filed on January 26, 2026, by Public Counsel, through anamicus curiaebrief. The SRE urged an immediate review of the Adelanto facilities to stop this lamentable situation arising from serious omissions in the care of detained migrants.
