The Democratic candidate for vice president of the United States, Kamala Harris, continues her campaign with an event in Michigan alongside former First Lady Michelle Obama. This event is part of a series of high-profile collaborations designed to motivate Democratic voters. Harris has recently met with figures such as Beyoncé in Houston and former President Barack Obama with Bruce Springsteen in Atlanta.
During an event in Houston, Harris criticized current President Donald Trump for resorting to "horrible, misogynistic, racist lies as a substitute for real ideas and solutions." It is expected that before the rally with Obama, the candidate will visit a medical clinic in Portage to discuss reproductive rights with healthcare providers and medical students.
Harris and Obama will be in Kalamazoo, in the southwestern part of the state of Michigan, coinciding with the first day of statewide early voting. So far, more than 1.4 million ballots have been sent out, representing 20% of registered voters.
During the 2016 campaign, Hillary Clinton tried to mobilize crowds with musical performances and Democratic allies, but still lost to Trump. The current president dismissed Harris's efforts to gather celebrity support, mentioning that she was "at a dance with Beyoncé."
Michelle Obama, for her part, has joined Harris's campaign for the first time. However, despite the influence of celebrities, there are no guarantees that this will sway the balance in favor of Democrats in the fight for the White House. Meanwhile, Trump will hold a rally in Novi, Michigan, before heading to Pennsylvania.
