El Chapo Guzmán Faces Criticism Over His Legal Defense and Health

El Chapo Guzmán, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, is incarcerated in the federal prison ADX Florence in Colorado, USA, as prisoner number 377. His lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, despite charging a million-dollar fee, failed to stop the Special Administrative Measures (SAM) regime or guarantee a fair trial for Guzmán.

The drug lord's family has expressed their discontent with Puerto Rican lawyer Mariel Colón, accusing her of neglecting Guzmán's defense for allegedly prioritizing her artistic career. Amnesty International and other organizations have criticized the inhumane conditions in the ADX Supermax prison where Guzmán is held under strict isolation.

Guzmán spends 23 hours a day in a three by two meter cell, with no contact with the outside world, and only has one hour a day to go out into the sun. Concerned about his legal situation, Guzmán has questioned his extradition and the process that led him to prison, recently filing a legal motion representing himself in search of a new trial and the possibility of reuniting with his children.

Reports indicate that El Chapo Guzmán suffers from health issues such as hypertension and anxiety, worsened by the strict isolation conditions in which he lives in prison. He receives daily treatment with Lisinopril to control his blood pressure and experiences anxiety attacks due to the extreme isolation without interaction with other inmates. Reports indicate that his health is in serious condition, according to information from Illicit Investigations, a network of journalists specializing in drug trafficking.
