Trump Threatens to Block New Canada Bridge Opening

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened on Monday to block the opening of a new bridge connecting his country with Canada, amid growing tensions between the two North American neighbors. "I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States receives full compensation for everything we have given them, and more importantly, until Canada treats the United States with the justice and respect we deserve," Trump wrote on his Truth Social network, according to a report by Xinhua accessed by Noticias Argentinas. "The revenues generated thanks to the U.S. market will be astronomical," Trump elaborated, adding that he plans to "start negotiations (related) immediately." Although Trump did not mention the bridge's name in his post, he appeared to be referring to the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a six-lane infrastructure that will connect Windsor, Ontario (Canada) with Detroit, Michigan (United States). Construction on the bridge began in 2018 and is scheduled to open early this year, while the project, with an estimated cost of $4.7 billion U.S., is being funded and overseen by the Canadian government, according to ABC News. "With all we have given them, we should own, perhaps, at least half of this asset."
