Dietitian Julia Zumpano explained that the carbonation of sparkling water is due to underground gases, and its amount depends on the minerals present in the rocks through which the water flows.

Mayo Clinic indicates that calcium strengthens bones, magnesium contributes to the proper functioning of muscles and joints, and potassium and sodium regulate and strengthen the cardiovascular system. There are different types of mineral water, such as natural, artificially carbonated, and flavored. The latter can be harmful due to added flavorings and sugars.

Drinking mineral water has benefits such as maintaining hydration, creating a feeling of fullness, and assisting with diets. There is no evidence that it is harmful to the kidneys in healthy individuals, although there is a popular belief to the contrary. On the other hand, carbonated mineral water is associated with improvements in blood circulation that could positively impact cardiovascular diseases.

Each type of mineral water has particular characteristics and effects on the body. From natural water containing minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium, to artificially carbonated water that lacks those minerals but also has no added sugars, making it an option for rehydration.
