The international festival of contemporary art "Desert X" opens tomorrow and has already become known for its giant art installations, displayed in the empty California desert. This year, within the festival framework, not only will several works be presented, including metallic mirrors, monumental blocks, and clay figurines, created using a 3D printer.
One of the festival participants is French-American artist Sarah Mhyuas, who created an astonishing piece made from melted metallic mirrors. These mirrors reflect sunlight on a wall made of gypsum, over 100 meters high, on which the phrase "Truth comes through slanting rays" is inscribed. The artist notes, "truth is very important in the world right now, and I strive to create art that does not demean people."
In a few kilometers from this work are huge monumental blocks by Mexican artist José Davila, weighing 16 tons each, sourced from a quarry in the desert of Chiuaua, his homeland. The creation resembles stone archaeological monuments, like Stonehenge in Great Britain, and is called "Contemporary Existence." This work is created in the context of strained relations between the USA and Mexico following Donald Trump's victory, especially in light of the introduction of the Republican president’s customs duties. José Davila remarks: "Such scales remind us that some things exist to remain, while others fade away in the end."
