General Motors (GM) and Nvidia announced an agreement on Tuesday, March 18, in which the automobile company will use the chip company's technology in its vehicles, driver assistance systems, and production plants. The partnership aims to develop artificial intelligence (AI) systems tailored to GM's vision, experience, and knowledge.
"We are excited to partner with GM to develop AI systems tailored to their vision, experience, and knowledge," said the two companies. GM has been testing the Nvidia Omniverse platform since 2022 for various applications. The collaboration will include the use of Nvidia Omniverse platforms with Nvidia Cosmos to enhance GM's plant planning and robotics.
Additionally, GM will employ Nvidia Drive AGX in its vehicles for future advanced driver assistance systems. Jensen Huang, Nvidia's CEO, announced the agreement at a pre-conference event for the company's developers in California. Huang mentioned that this partnership will enable General Motors to "build its future fleet of autonomous vehicles."
Huang also presented Halos, a security system that combines Nvidia's automotive hardware and software security solutions with AI research for the safety of future autonomous vehicles. Meanwhile, Mary Barra, CEO of GM, highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence for the automaker.
Barra explained that AI not only optimizes manufacturing processes and accelerates virtual testing but also helps build vehicles and empowers the workforce to focus on craftsmanship. For Huang, the era of physical AI has arrived, and together with GM, they are transforming transportation, from vehicles to the factories where they are produced.
