Death of Mexican Migrant in California Detention Center

A Mexican migrant died on the night of March 25 while in custody of immigration authorities at the Adelanto processing center in California, the Consulate of Mexico in San Bernardino reported. According to preliminary information provided by center authorities, the national was transferred to a hospital in Victorville, where his death was subsequently confirmed. So far, the cause of death has not been officially determined. In response to these events, the Consulate immediately activated its consular protection protocol and contacted the family to provide assistance and support. It also maintains communication with US authorities to obtain the complete medical file, learn about the circumstances prior to the incident, and clarify what happened. The Foreign Ministry points to possible ICE omissions. The Secretariat of Foreign Relations (SRE) demanded an immediate review of the detention center in Adelanto, citing possible omissions and deficiencies in the medical care of people in immigration custody. This case adds to other recent reports of Mexicans dying in detention centers of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which has raised concern in the Mexican government, which has demanded exhaustive investigations and greater transparency in these processes. The Foreign Ministry reiterated that it will exhaust all legal and diplomatic avenues to follow up on the case and stressed its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of Mexicans abroad.
